The Wa-Hi JROTC precision rifle team earned fifth place in the National All-Service JROTC Championship on March 22-24. Seniors Kyle Jameson and Karri Mickelson, junior Caitlyn Lasseigne and sophomore Sarah Jameson participated in the competition.
“It was a little bit new, a little bit intimidating, but they performed well,” rifle team coach Mark Mebes said. The team had to progress through several rounds of competition to qualify for this championship, including a mail-in competition and an Army competition in February. The shooters then travelled to Indiana to compete in the two-day event, earning fifth place out of around 200 shooters and 15 teams. They were awarded a shiny trophy, which glistens on display in the shooting range.
“It’s a good start. This is our first year at this competition,” Mickelson said. “Next year, we should have no problem winning.”
