The Heir is the fourth book in the Selection Series by Kiera Cass. The Selection books are about Prince Maxon and about how he finds his wife by taking part in a traditional selection, a competition in which 34 girls from their country come to the palace and the prince chooses one of them to be the queen.
This book focuses on Eadlyn, daughter of Queen America and King Maxon, who has to go through a selection, similar to the Bachlorette, to find a prince to marry.
When the people of Illéa, the futuristic North America, start a revolt, Eadlyn and her family know they need a distraction. Her parents decide on having the first female-run selection.
Throughout the book Eadlyn eliminates men who cause trouble in the castle, but continues to be stubborn about who she might want to be with for the rest of her life. Eadlyn is an independent girl who thinks she needs no one by her side. It takes her awhile, but she finally decides that she will have find a man to marry for her parents to be happy.
I really enjoyed this book because of the characters and their development. The author uses the narrative writing style in this book, as well as in the previous books.
This is a fast-read book and can be read in under five hours. This book has information about the previous books, so the books should be read in sequence..
This book falls into the futuristic fantasy genre. Although it is a book about princes and princesses, I think boys would really like it too because some boys may be interested in seeing a girl’s point of view. I would recommend this book and series to anyone.
This book is available at Book & Game and at the Walla Walla Public Library.
